“Your brand is your business and your business is your brand.”

Branding is hands down one of the most important investments you’ll make for your business. It's the most important piece of your marketing strategy, your guiding principles and your platform for connection. Your brand shows people who you are, what you stand for and how you’re going to make a difference in people’s lives. It has the power to make or break your business.

It doesn't matter if you're branding your business, your blog or yourself, it is all equally important. From your logo to brand colours, your packaging to business cards, your writing style to website imagery, it all needs to create a beautiful cohesive brand. One that customers can connect to.

When a customer feels connected to a brand, they invest in that brand emotionally and when someone invests emotionally in your brand, you can pretty much expect a financial investment to follow. Think of the brands you buy from and why you bought from them. It is likely because you felt connected to their story, their purpose, their mission, their team, their imagery, their voice. And all those pieces were put together into one cohesive brand that attracted you. Their ideal customer.

Whether you’re starting a blog or setting out to be the next Google, creating a strong brand identity should be one of your main areas of focus. It’s one of the top 3 most important things you can do for your business. And it should be one of your first orders of business, after you decide what you’re selling, the name of your business and your business structure.

So, you’ve got your offerings laid out, your name is chosen and you’ve decided on the right business structure to start. Now, it's time to craft your brand. Simple, right? You just need to put together a logo, a few colours and choose your fonts?

Sorry to be bad news Barbara over here, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Your brand is so much more than a few pretty details. It can not be rushed. You need to invest in your branding. You need to get to know yourself, your competitors, ideal customers, business goals, values, vision and your why. Your branding encompasses all of this and will direct every single business decision you make from now until death do you and your business part. From choosing how to caption a photo to hiring your next employee. Whenever you are faced with a decision, you must be able to answer a clear yes or no to “is this on brand for my business?”. If you can’t answer this question because you’re not clear on your brand, you’re going to make a lot of poor business decisions. And these bad decisions could lead to the demise of your business before it’s even really started.

This isn’t meant to intimidate you. This is simply meant to open your eyes to what goes into a carefully curated, successful brand and get you started on the right path that will guide you to building a brand that let’s you answer any question with the confidence of Queen Bey, “yes, this is on brand for my business”.
